Be prepared to use a dictionary a lot when reading this book. It is well worth it.There is a point where several of the characters argue in Latin concerning which language is the most important language for the well bred. I must admit the point of English being the living language, constantly growing, has me convinced. Perhaps another language will be your choice. In any event, the argument is lively, even if they all agree to disagree.This is William Shakespeare as we never knew him. He is actually more interesting. Definitely not at all the playwright we all presume is all he was. A bit of a huge trouble maker. Quite fun in fact. Any further comments will be be spoilers. But I really like him in his pre-writing days.

Writing a novel about William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe is an audacious venture, but I know of no writer who could pull it off as well as David Blixt. David Blixt is both a Shakespearian actor and a writer of historical fiction. Among his delightful creations are The Lord of Verona and Colossus, Stone and Steel. A fugitive from injustice, Will Shakespeare, AKA Will Falstaff, is employed at teaching in a rural school in Lancashire. His pupils are less than promising. There is a ruckus outside the school room and Will ends up rescuing a damsel in distress who is being accosted and mauled by two ruffians. The damsel turned out to be no damsel at all, but a young man named Christopher Marlowe, who, it turns out, is in the employ of Sir Edward Walsingham who heads the secret service of good Queen Bess. Young Kit Marlowe believes that he has uncovered a plot by Papists to assassinate the Queen and place Mary, Queen of Scots on the throne, thereby restoring England to Catholicism. Marlowe convinces Will that his life is now in danger and he must flee with him to London. It's a case of "Please don't throw me in the brier patch." Young Will finds London, despite its obvious dangers and intense urban blight, much to his liking. "It was a remarkable discovery, one that Will vowed then and there not to forget. There was more life in these low beings, in these clowns and vagabonds, these rakes and hellions, these criminals and idiots, than in all the respectable gentlemen of the court. Huffing Kate, Blacke Davie, Tarlton, Cutting Ball-these creatures positively teemed with spirit, overflowing the meager cups of their existence with their humor, their desires, their very essence. They were as worthy of immortality as the highest monarch born to the throne." Anyone who enjoys the down-to-earth aspects of Shakespeare will love this book, the puns, bon mots, double entendres, and witticisms fly fast and furious throughout. His Majesty's Will is a book worth savoring more than once.

This book was an unalloyed delight from start to finish, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Even if you're not already a lover of Shakespeare's works, you'll be swept along by the engaging story, the witty repartee, and the vibrant and varied characters. But if you ARE a Shakespeare lover, you'll have a terrific time meeting up with more than a few familiar faces along the way.Her Majesty's Will is an Elizabethan buddy comedy/drama/romance/adventure. Like ya do. It's Hope and Crosby meets Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks. It belongs on the shelf alongside The Princess Bride.I will admit up front that, for me, a book is usually an intellectual exercise; I don't generally see what I read in my mind's eye. But this book filled my head with the sights, sounds, feel, and even tastes and smells - for better and for worse - of Elizabethan England; a fully-realized vision. I await the further adventures of Kit and Will with 'bated breath.Brava, Mr. Blixt!

I first read this when it was first released in the kindle edition back in 2013. I loved it then and with this re reading love it even more. It is a rollicking journey into what might have, could have been. I was hoping to get to Chicago for the theatrical adaptation but missed it. David Blixt is on the top of his game with this romp. The comic otherside to his Verona books.

About the Author

David Marquet, a top graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, commanded the nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine USS Santa Fe from 1999 to 2001. Since retiring from the Navy he has worked with businesses nationwide as a leadership consultant. He gives presentations around the world about his acclaimed first book, Turn the Ship Around: A True Story of Turning Leaders Into Followers. He lives in Florida with his wife, Jane.Andy Worshek served with David Marquet and was instrumental in the turnaround of the USS Santa Fe, told in the business bestseller Turn the Ship Around!, where he is promeninetly mentioned. Andy helped implement the Intent-Based Leadership (TM) methodology while serving as the sonar chief and eventually chief of the boat for the USS Santa Fe, and continued to develop the methodology in the Navy and as head of HR at a leading accounting firm. It was OK. I read the book about a year ago so this was a nice refresher.

As a physician in an organization always striving for improvement and being one of the best in the industry, I found this workbook spot on, relevant and well-organized. An excellent adjuvant to "Turn the Ship Around". I highly recommend this workbook to all healthcare organizations. The leadership strategies of adopting "intent-based Leadership" are applicable to all industries.

I wish I had gotten the hardcopy version instead of the Kindle version. The kindle formatting makes it much harder to read when there are diagrams with callouts and photos with captions. The text may be discussing the different body shapes, bow designs, shoulders, etc. and it's impossible to keep flipping around in the Kindle to recall what was what. The diagrams... ugh! You just can't zoom in on the Kindle to see what that little blob of text says! The author talked about learning all the names of the kayak parts and mentioned "coaming". For the life of me I could not get the diagram clear enough to see what the heck the coaming was, and ended up looking up the word from Wikipedia. Not how a book should be.The information is good, lots of common sense, and good things to make sure you pay attention to when you test out a kayak. The info in the book would get 4 stars if it were better formatted for the kindle (and readable!)

I was hesitant to go with the title due to its corporate publisher (McGraw Hill imprint) figuring the smaller publishers with more specialization in outdoor activity publishing would offer better books or the more well known authors might have better selections. But the reviews kept leading me back to Johnson's rather inexpensive but very comprehensive Handbook.The most important aspect of this title is Shelley Johnson's writing style. I found most kayak books to read like the author was an outdoors' person trying to be a writer rather than an excellent writer laying out all the key concepts of the activity. That being said, Johnson has impressive credentials and a solid understanding and mastery of kayaking and covered all aspects in respectable detail compared to many of the other "handbooks" that were rather short.Three negatives come to mind and are minor flaws only. Pictures in the book (very good photography, I might add) almost all displayed Current Designs kayaks which seemed odd considering how many different kayakers were photographed. Made me thing there was some underwriting or sponsorship and annoyed me slightly for some odd reason. Number two is Johnson's use of "she" which is a personal pet peeve of mine rather than using a gender neutral "their" to describe an unknown third person. Finally, 10 pages on cooking with 7 of those pages being recipies was just weird. I understand the book should have a small section on cooking and camping while touring. But 10 pages for cooking seemed excessive.Trip planning, navigation, and weather were all sensational additions to my developing knowledge. While I have become well versed though hardly fully proficient in most strokes, the chapter on strokes was very well done with good pictures and illustrations. The sidebars bring up a lot of controversies and issues associated with the activity, gear, etc. This book was even better than I had expected it would be and is an incredible value for the price considering the comprehensive nature and better writing style than other similar titles.

This is a great book for the beginning kayaker. I have canoed and sailed for close to 40 years and just recently took up kayaking. After several lessons and going out on my own a few times I bought this book. It filled in a lot of the blanks and is a very balanced presentation of the subject matter.The kayaking instructor that I went to is definitely a knowledgeable individual but he is, as I have found many in the sport to be, very opinionated. Had I not read The Complete Sea Kayaker's Handbook I think my knowledge of the sport would have been limited to what I learned by trial and error on my own and the limited presentation I got from the instructor. The book is pretty neutral on subjects that are more personal preference like boat selection, skegs vs. rudders vs. neither, paddle selection, etc. There is good coverage of the safety aspects and equipment, beyond what was in the lessons I took.Overall the book is a really good supplement to lessons and paddling experience. I find myself going back and rereading sections of it after each time I go out paddling. I am sure that will change with experience but it is a great reference.

Not anywhere as scary as some other texts- which makes it easier for a neophyte. I used it with a sea kayaking class in the local community college which has a course offering. The instructors plan to use it for the class in the future. It also covers the same subjects as the other books.

Very well done encyclopedic coverage of all things related to sea kayaking. A great primer for those looking to get into, or expand their knowledge, of sea kayaking.

Great book, been paddling for a year and recently got a sea kayak and this book really helped clarify subjects. A very useful handbook!A great purchase and I'm sure you will not regret it!

I am a new paddler and found this book to be very informative and entertaining. It is an easy read with a lot of good information. I bought the Kindle version and will probably get the paper version as well so that I can have it more readily at hand. A great buy!
