This book was a Christmas gift. It's a brief biography of each of the 3 aviators in question, first their childhoods and how they came to fly, continuing on to their contributions to WWI and WWII (in the case of Doolittle and Rickenbacker) and Lindberg's trans-atlantic flight and subsequent problems with the press and ultimate work on aviation research in WWII. As another commenter noted, there do seem to be some historical errors, but overall the storytelling is good. The author switches between the 3 aviators, telling the various parts of their stories which occur during the same time frame, making it somewhat easier to follow. Overall, it's a good story.

I had high hopes for this book, but I ended up being a little disappointed and questioning of the author's credibility. While giving an overview of German conquests early in WWII, he includes the assertion that Finland and Sweden were conquered by Nazi armies. First, Finland was a German ally throughout the war, and second, Sweden was famously neutral throughout the war! It's such an egregious factual error that it made me question the credibility of the rest of the book. He later asserts that a "significant portion of the American Army...including the 101st Airborne Division" was surrounded by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. Again, this is just plain dead wrong...the 101st was the ONLY division (of nearly 50) of the American Army in Europe surrounded by the Germans during that battle...or any battle, for that matter. These are issues of the most basic military history that he gets absurdly wrong.I didn't keep notes, so those are the ones that stood out in particular, but there were others that weren't as patently obvious. He also seems to exaggerate the influence of the three Aviators at several points. For instance, he claims one was directed to inform air corps personnel during speeches in N. Africa and the Mediterranean theaters that their minimum tours had been extended. I highly doubt a visiting civilian would be tasked with personally informing thousands of airmen of a MAJOR policy change in their assignments. I suppose it's possible in the remotest sense, but I rolled my eyes at the likelihood of it.He also claims the Doolittle raid essentially led to what ultimately became the Japanese defeat. Hmmm, every other historian and war leaders at the time agreed it's only real value was a morale boost...and nothing more. He also refers to the German JU-88 light bombers that attacked Doolittle's B-17 as one of the most dangerous German planes in their arsenal. Ha! Not exactly. Any single-engine fighter (the JU-88 was a twin-engine light bomber) would have been MUCH more dangerous. These may seem like nit-picks, but they're such basic mistakes, and the more subtle exaggerations were sufficiently commonplace that it left a poor taste in my mouth and led me to be skeptical of the overall factual accuracy of the book. Also, there's really nothing new in it that one couldn't get from any number of biographies of the principals that has already been written. He doesn't really tie in the experiences of the three into any cohesive or overarching premise as to how they collectively...as a coordinated threesome...advanced aviation.Still, I gave it 3 stars, because it IS a fairly entertaining read, I learned a few things (I think...if they were fully accurate anyway), and it's a fast read. Just remember to have some grains of salt on-hand if you do read it.

A jumble of facts (some mistakes) put together to form a book. Not enough time for a good biography of any of the three men chosen. Not really a history of aviation due to lack of timeline and failure to include so many other contemporary contributors. Had way too much personal information on Lindbergh in comparison with the other two men. Made poor use of a great deal of good research. Would recommend spending your time on true biographies/autobiographies in order to get a better sense of the things that these pioneers accomplished. Chuck Yeager, Jackie Cochran, Beryl Markham, the Wright Brothers, and so many other amazing people have written some of the most interesting books I have ever read. Berg' s book on Lindbergh is superb along with Doolittle' s own book on his life.

A nicely done compilation of histories of three of America's most famous and influential aviators. The choice was well made and the story chronicles the parallel lives of Lindbergh, Doolittle and Rickenbacker nicely. There were some jarring and glaring errors that a competent and knowledgeable editor should have caught, i.e: Germany did NOT invade Sweden and Finland during WWII as was otherwise asserted by the author. This was not the only such error, just one of the most memorable. Also some snippy/snarky asides by the author that I didn't feel belonged in this kind of work. Those aside I did very much enjoy the book, would recommend it and might even read it again someday. Would have gotten 4 stars w/o the mis-steps. This was also one of the first Kindle books I've ever read, trying to wrench my 58 year-old self into the 21st century.

This is an engaging, well-written history of three important figures instrumental in the early history of and the development of aviation on a world scale. As an aviation writer myself, I know much of the history Groom covers, but there are certainly revelations in the book that were new to me, especially about Rickenbacker. Similarly, Lindbergh's combat experience in the Pacific was more extensive than I had realized. It could have used a good review by an aviation-savvy editor, however. There are numerous technical descriptions that, while not flat out wrong, aren't very accurate, either. Nonetheless, the book is a quick, informative read that I would recommend for any reader interested in the history of aviation.

Victoe Cha is one of the authorities in studying Korean Peninsula. This book addresses the challenges of North korea's nuclear weapon programs and its threat to US allies in the region. The author analyzes the strategies for dealing with North Korea's nuclear weapon programs with both progress and failure.

Needs to have a revision, but this is a really good book

Well written and easy to follow. I especially love the way the book is set up. Two authors who lean towards slightly different directions (hawk/dove) in regards to how America should engage with North Korea, present their argument while also responding to the other's arguments in alternating chapters.

After the first Gulf War, several second/third world countries made the observation that the technical and other advantages possesed by the U. S. make it imperative that any country concerned about an attack from the United States have nuclear weapons. I note that I don't see President Bush talking much about attacking North Korea. General Gary Luck offered a quick sound bite on the costs of a war in N. Korea: "one million casualties, one trillion dollars in industrial damage and lost business."In this excellent book the authors attempt to bring some sense to the scare headlines so loved by the news media -- Newsweek called the North Korean leader, "Dr. Evil." The book is written by two professors, one a bit more hawkish, one a bit more dovish. They present their views, they discuss the others viewpoint, they then try to come up with an overall plan that makes sense.A million casualties -- somebody better come up with a plan that's better than TV's talking heads. With this book I also highly recommend "North Korea at a Crossroads" by Suk Hi Kim.

Professors Cha and Kang come at the current and historic crisis in North Korea from different angles: Cha from a more "realist" view of international relations, Kang from a more "liberal" view. The book is a series of several chapters written alternately by Cha and Kang with each pair of chapters focusing on one aspect of the Korean problem. Both view North Korea as being entirely "rational," and make a point to discredit 30-second sound byte types of analyses of North Korea's decisionmaking process. Cha finds that it is perfectly rational for North Korea to attack or go nuclear even if the end result has a high probability of resulting in total destruction, because the status quo is so unbearable that the North is willing to bear the risk. Kang suggests that increased economic development, integration into the world economy, and the introduction of market forces will alter North Korea's cost-benefit analysis and push it away from violent military action or the active pursuit of a nuclear weapons program. In the end, both agree that the default strategy for the United States is engagement.Cha and Kang do a good job of bringing intellectual depth to a debate that is often over-simplified. It makes a good read for the average reader while remaining a strong academic work of its own. This is not a history book--it is a book examining academic questions with real-world implications.
