Not as dry as some books on public art history and practice, it is in fact quite engaging. I read this in conjuncture with an internship at an Art Commission, and the information is definitely for insiders, but I hope even if you don't have experience or knowledge of this field you still read this, as the information would be interesting to anyone who has an interest in this area. It is even more valuable considering it was only published last year, and so the information is fresher. It is especially annoying to have to read outdated (sometimes by 20 years) books on "contemporary" public art. If you are in the market for this kind of informative read, please don't skip this one!

Review

In Flora and Ulysses, longtime fans will find a happy marriage of Mercy Watson's warmth and wackiness and Edward Tulane's gentle life lessons. In Flora, they will find a girl worth knowing, and one they will remember.—The New York Times Book ReviewNewbery-winner DiCamillo is a master storyteller not just because she creates characters who dance off the pages and plots, whether epic or small, that never fail to engage and delight readers. Her biggest strength is exposing the truths that open and heal the human heart. She believes in possibilities and forgiveness and teaches her audience that the salt of life can be cut with the right measure of love.—Booklist (starred review)Original, touching and oh-so-funny tale starring an endearingly implausible superhero and a not-so-cynical girl.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Despite supremely quirky characters and dialogue worthy of an SAT prep class, there’s real emotion at the heart of this story involving two kids who have been failed by the most important people in their lives: their parents.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)Rife with marvelously rich vocabulary reminiscent of the early superhero era (e.g., “Holy unanticipated occurrences!”) and amusing glimpses at the world from the point of view of Ulysses the supersquirrel, this book will appeal to a broad audience of sophisticated readers. There are plenty of action sequences, but the novel primarily dwells in the realm of sensitive, hopeful, and quietly philosophical literature.—School Library Journal (starred review)

#9,300 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I’m a third grader at an elementary school in Wisconsin, and this is what I think about the book, Flora and Ulysses. The main character in the book, Flora, is a 10 year old natural born cynic. Well that’s what she likes to call herself. Her mother thinks she’s weird because she has a superhero rodent named Ulysses as her best friend. This book is also illustrated with comic strips that are great for allowing the reader to visualize the story. It will always have a kick of humor but stays true to the author’s style with a sweet, heartwarming ending. If you or your child loves a book where the genre is fantasy and always will be based on animals with human like characteristics, then Kate Dicamillo is your author, and this is a great book for you.

Holy unanticipated occurrences! Last week I was distracted from a good book (Peter and the Starcatchers) by a better book. Okay, it wasn't unanticipated because it happens to me quite often, but that is Flora Buckman's favorite line from her favorite comic, which guides her when she discovers a squirrel with super powers. Yes, you read that right. A squirrel with super powers. Bet you didn't anticipate that, did you!In Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures there are many unanticipated occurrences and it all begins with a vacuum cleaner, a squirrel and a natural born cynic named Flora. There is a wacky cast of characters including a self absorbed romance writer, an air head neighbor, an emotionally traumatized great-nephew next door and a sad, sad father. They all tip toe right up to the line of being too wacky but only cross the line a little and in such silly ways I loved them for it. In fact, I won't even try to give you a plot synopsis because honestly, it's a simple and predictable plot but a joy to read and discover on your own.Kate DiCamillo books are always wonderful read alouds, but this one is just BEGGING for a dramatic reading. I gave it to my brilliant eight year old for Christmas and we've had a terrific time either reading alone or together. This is a great book for sitting close on the sofa so you can both see the pictures but leave plenty of room for dramatic gestures which you'll probably find necessary as you read. The illuminations (illustrations) are basic yet expressive and they really enhance the humor. Honestly, it's hard to capture the funny wonderfulness of Flora and Ulysses in a review. You have to read it for yourself. :)

It all begins when Mrs. Tickman's husband buys her a Ulysses Super-Suction, Multi-Terrain 2000X vacuum cleaner and vacuums up a squirrell. Flora Bell, a young neighbor sees what happens. She rushes over and revives the squirrell. She takes him home and names him Ulysses. Soon Ulysses begins to develop extraordinary powers. He communicates with Flora by head nods and typing letters. Flora really needs a friend because her mother and father are divorced. Flora and her mother can't seem to get along. From this hilarious beginning evolves a story that will leave you laughing out loud as Flora and Ulysses get into one scrape after another. They make many friends who like them have unmet needs. The story becomes the adventure of how Flora and Ulysses interaction with people has a chain effect that will try the patience of some and bring great change and understanding to all the lives they touch.

Imaginative story about a girl, her squirrel, her divorced parents, William Shiver, and a couple of other endearing characters. The story subtly delves into Flora's feelings of self-doubt. She's not sure if her mother really loves her. We also are introduced to William Shiver, who has his own issues of abandonment. I love how Flora fills a hole in William Shiver's heart with her kindness. If this book had been written when I was a youth, it would have ended with everyone getting back together; happily ever after and so on. This book doesn't wind everything up so neatly, but still it ends with promise. I can see why it won the Newberry award. I heard the author's acceptance speech and was so impressed with her. Excellent book--written for youth but with depth enough for all ages.

This was one of 5 chapter book read-alouds that I did with my third-grade class over the past school year and they ranked it their favorite. The colorful characters, BIG fun words, superb comic book style illustrations, and pure heart of this story cause it to stand out. Children of all ages and from many walks of life will relate to this book and the heart of Flora, along with her pet squirrel, Ulysses.

Initially, I downloaded this book because it is the 2014 winner of the Newberry Award. I LOVED this book because it is one of the most amazing stories I have ever read. Hey, I know it's a children's book -- so? The story is resplendent with twists and turns that will touch anyone, whatever the age. The words light up the pages! The writing is difficult to describe -- clever, touching and laugh-out-loud funny -- and other adjectives yet to be invented. The story is about a tiny squirrel that is suddenly transformed into a superhero with unimaginable superpowers -- the greatest being his uncanny ability to love others. Children's books have many themes but Kate DiCamilo's tale is not vague about the importance of thinking of others first, and loving them.If I was fortunate enough to have a grandchild, I would read this wondrous book over and over to him/her. In the meantime,I'll give this special book to everyone I know, regardless of age.Joyce Norman, Author

Willie O'Ree: The story of the first black player in the NHL (Lorimer Recordbooks)

From Booklist

More an isolated precursor than a true Jackie Robinson–style barrier breaker, Canadian Willie O’Ree played for the Boston Bruins in just 45 games between 1957 and 1961 (he had a fairly long career with pro and semi-pro teams in other leagues) and so will probably be unknown even to confirmed hockey fans. Nonetheless, because he was good enough on the ice not only to overcome racial prejudice but to conceal the fact that he had been blinded in one eye by a puck, his story is unusually compelling. In later years, he took charge of the NHL’s diversity programs and training. Mortillaro includes almost no game action in her admiring tribute, but she does paint clear pictures of the sport’s history and significance, especially in Canada, as well as the racial hostility that O’Ree braved through much of his playing career. There is no statistical table, and the black-and-white photos are both rare and murky, but the generous resource list at the end will be helpful to readers who want to know more about this undeservedly obscure player. Grades 4-6. --John Peters

"Willie O'Ree is an inspiring biography that tells how a brave young man was determined to realize his dream... If you are studying human rights or slavery this is a great account to share with your children. And if you have a child that is already interested in hockey this would be a wonderful tool to use to share history with them." (Hammock Home School Blog 2013-04-08)"Willie O'Ree is well-researched. [Mortillaro has made Willie O'Ree's story an engrossing one. Her writing style is easy to read and suitable for young readers." Highly Recommended. (Thomas F. Chambers CM: Canadian Review of Materials 2012-11-30)Featured as a "Book of Interest" in The Seniors' Advocate (2012-12-01)“[Mortillaro does paint clear pictures of the sport’s history and significance, especially in Canada, as well as the racial hostility that O’Ree braved through much of his playing career.” (John Peters Booklist (U.S.) 2013-05-01)“[Mortillaro’s touch is light and energetic, so that O’Ree’s life story advances quickly... I would highly recommend this book for literacy collections, classroom libraries, and general libraries. It could also make a nice gift for young hockey fans” Rated E, excellent, enduring, everyone should see it! (Leslie Vermeer Resource Links 2013-02-15)"This biography stands on its own as a well written life story of a man who had his fifteen minutes of fame but supplements the Willie O'Ree story with a running anecdote of racism in society and modern sports, physical impairment, the history of the development of the NHL, the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 60s. Willie O'Ree is a gem to be discovered." (Kent Miller Canadian Teacher 2014-01-15)

I think I was expecting "more" from this book as far as size or images, based on the price, which seems quite high for a slim volume about the size of a Harlequin Romance. This is not an indictment of the author, but more of the publisher. This is a book written mainly for children, upper elementary or middle school grades. Warning: "The N Word" is included, as a quotation as historical fact, which does not bother me in the context, but parents/teachers may want to be prepared. The story of Willie O'Ree, "the Jackie Robinson of professional hockey" is an important story. O'Ree is much less well-known than Robinson, but no less important in the boundaries broken. Hockey remains probably the least diverse of professional sports in North America. O'Ree's accomplishment as the first person of African decent to break the color barrier cracked a door, but unfortunately it took several years after O'Ree's career ended for others of African or Native decent to join the ranks of professional hockey players.

The book description did not indicate that the book was a children's book. The writing was very juvenile. It covered the professional life of Willie O'Ree but I was anticipating a more adult focused biography.

A great into to a great and timely athlete.

Book does no mention of Don McKenney nor the rest of Valiant Boston Bruins of the Late 1950s!

review overstated the grade and age level this book was written for.

I had to do a research project on him, and this book saved me. Without this book I wouldn't have been able to complete my project.
