Natasha Smirnova’s life is changed irrevocably the day Hitler’s forces march into Kiev. As the city is occupied and the German troops begin their stranglehold, the Smirnova family is repeatedly torn apart; by death, by imprisonment, even by a budding romance.Savaged Lands follows Natasha’s life as she struggles to hold her family together throughout the German occupation. She watches as the German troops march in, as they begin enforcing their new rules and the city begins to change around her. Those close to her are gradually whittled away, either due to dissent, German policy or simply by the choices they make in order to survive. The sense of potential doom hangs over her every day.But there are lighter moments, as well. Her chance encounter with a Hungarian soldier conscripted into the German occupation swiftly blossoms into a love affair that shapes the rest of her life. The moments they manage to steal away and be together are among the lightest and most hopeful in the book.Obviously, anything related to the Second World War is not going to be an easy read and there are moments where the full horror of what happened is hinted at. But, for the most part, things are kept at a personal level. That is traumatic enough.Since the focus is on the Smirnova family, the emotions of the family members feature very strongly. Some withdraw and become embittered while others cling to the hope that they will be saved. As the war drags on, they find themselves changing to cope with their new reality. These emotional developments never feel forced and add an extra layer of reality to what is already a very strong story-line.All in all, Savaged Lands is a very good novel exploring the joys of a new relationship, the horrors of surviving a Nazi occupation, the will to survive and keep believing in hope.

Savaged Lands contains a lot of different elements. There’s budding romance, wartime fear, and characters who long to simply return to peaceful times and their homes. Throughout all this is a clear overview of what war does to people’s lives. Not the detached sort of war seen on a television screen video game, but the kind that tears at every aspect of a community. In demonstrating a real war’s travesty, ‘Savaged Lands’ is right on the mark. It’s the events happening—not the characters—that drew me. To be very clear; this story is not happy-go-lucky or slice of life. Readers shouldn’t touch it if they don’t like feeling ‘things’. Imagine Schindler's List—but with a different scope and region. For those unfamiliar with the movie—we have a city occupied by the invading Nazi army. We have citizens from all regions represented as they deal with a controlling government doctrine, racial oppression and outright mass murder, extortion, conscription and so on. It’s a heavy air where inhumane atrocities happen one after the other. Through it all, we’re following a girl of nineteen as she tries to cope with constant change.I’ll quote one line from around twenty-five percent that made me try to hold back tears since I’m a big softy and this was blipping heart-rending.Nikita buried his head in his hands and sobbed. Mother whispered to Natasha, ‘The things he told me on the way here… He felt his Papa shudder for the last time when the bullets hit him. He heard his last breath.’That being said, I had a few minor quibbles. Scenes and conversations can flow quickly if you’re not carefully reading word for word. The tone is set with a few well-phrased details but they were rapid and didn’t give me time to absorb the severity at times—it got lost in the almost ‘normal’ conversation. Finally, there were many places where I paused and detached myself from the novel to try and figure out ‘why’ the invading army did what it did. Many out there may wonder if this tale has any sort of bright spot. In short—yes. There were a lot of small wonders throughout the story. I enjoyed the budding romance aspect, how they snuck around, and the occasional levity. The family interaction was comforting as they struggled to stay together. The third person made the tragedy observable just far enough away to survive. In the end, everything ends on a positive note. For the genre, story tone and affecting me enough to sit down and hang my head as the events made me sad; Savaged Lands get a solid four star leaning toward a five. These types of stories are something I believe everyone should read once in a while—if only to remind ourselves of war’s cost.

This is a captivating book about the Smirnova family who live in German-occupied Kiev during WWII when bombings, hunger, cruelty and brutally cold winters are the norm. The author tells the story in a way that isn't gloomy or depressing, given the war, but is hopeful and enchanting. What a beautiful love story between Natasha and Mark, a couple I rooted for with fingers crossed throughout this novel. I fell in love with them both.Ms. Kortchik paints a vivid picture of the streets of Kiev, the buildings, the autumn, the snow, and how war changes everyone's life. Maybe it's just me, but I was reminded of Dr. Zhivago, a book I adore, although it's in a different time. When I wasn't reading it, I found myself missing the family and eagerly wanting to find out what happened next to each of the characters.Lovely, well written novel of loss, hope, and love. Highly recommend!

I've read numerous Nazi-themed novels set in WWII. I don't know why I keep doing that to myself, as the Nazis were thoroughly reprehensible; morbid fascination, I suppose, plus I think that what they did should never be forgotten lest it happen again. I'd never read one that focused on the occupation of Kiev, so I picked this one up. The history was interesting, as were the characters, and I thought the book was well-written. I'll read more from this author.

This story was very reminiscent of Paulina Simon's trilogy, starting with the "Bronze Horseman." To be honest, I enjoyed Ms. Simon's books a lot more. Even down to the scrabbling sisters and mismatched love interests. The biggest difference in the two books is that "The Story of Us" takes place in Kiev, while "The Bronze Horseman" takes place in the former Leningrad. Both are tragic stories of the horrors visited by the Nazis on the Russian people. They suffered unbelievably, but still they persevered. I wouldn't not tell anyone to not read "The Story of Us," but, I would recommend Ms. Simon's trilogy instead.

"An original, innovative, exciting book."--Carl Rogers, Ph.D.What is focusing? Based on research at the University of Chicago, focusing is a new technique of self therapy that teaches you to identify and change the way your personal problems concretely exist in your body. Focusing consists of steps of felt change. Unlike methods that stress "getting in touch with your feelings," there is a built-in test: each focusing step, when done correctly, is marked by a physical relief, a profound release of tension. Focusing guides you to the deepest level of awareness within your body. It is on this level, unfamiliar to most people, that unresolved problems actually exist, and only on this level can they change."A superb manual for self-managed therapy. . .a tool beyond price."--Brain-Mind Bulletin

6 stars. Gendlin, a student of Carl Rogers, took things a few steps further than his mentor, in a technological direction.Make no mistake, focusing is a technology or technique that can be taught to anyone of average or above average intelligence who has guts and some inclination toward introspection. It's not something that fits everyone. If you are ineluctably stupid or self-deceiving, this won't help you. As an ineluctably stupid or dishonest person, you won't recognize yourself as such, and will think this book is meant for you.You will buy it and put it aside nearly immediately. That's ok--you've helped boost its rank on Amazon. It's about time you did something nice for other people. Focusing is said to be meditational. Which I guess it is. But I'd almost call it anti-meditational. If traditional clear your mind meditation bores or repels you, focusing is not that. It is highly intentional, active and verbal. The whole point is to drag up what's not verbal within you and make it verbal. "Drag" sounds a little harsh, and focusing is not harsh--maybe dredge is a better word?If you've ever wanted to be a writer, envied how they express things that you were only dimly aware of thinking the same thing until they said it, focusing is for you.And focusing is fun. It is designed specifically to give you a doggy treat at the end of most sessions: The "A-ha!" moment of insight that you spend $200 a week with a therapist to get now and then.It is also very practical: You can bring it to bear on immediate practical issues and I have found that it brings me to much better immediate problem-solving: I have no idea how to handle this meeting in the morning. And it's really wonderful for slightly bigger questions. Should I change my career? What do I do next about my problem adult child? My boss is driving me crazy, how do I handle him better? I'm afraid my spouse doesn't care for me anymore.I've never gotten bad advice or made a major screw-up because of focusing. Your mileage may vary.

Eugene Gendlin is the man who "developed" the method that's called "focusing," so by reading this book, you're getting the original developer's approach, and it's *great* stuff! Having said that, it also takes practice and personal exploration to learn more about yourself and how you work inside. I highly recommend reading more from two sources on the Web: focusing.org, where you'll find more by Eugene Gendlin and others who have also contributed to the advancement and diversifying of the original methods, and focusingresources.com, where Ann Weiser Cornell (one of Eugene Gendlin's most advanced students, who has developed her own strengths and insights extremely well) offers another treasure trove of insight and resources. She is particularly good at noticing subtle differences in how we use language, and those subtle differences play a very powerful role in getting stuck and getting unstuck! Even still, I encourage everyone to continue exploring on your own. Don't stop here!

I wish I could help everyone to understand how to do this. It's a "miracle" way of knowing yourself, and yet, I have been unconsciously doing it for years. Not to this extent, of course, and with this understanding. My guess is that many people are naturals at this, but don't know it and don't know how to use it for their good

Tuned in to others, I needed a little help tuning into my own feelings. Gendlin told me why and how. Herbert Benson taught me how to meditate and Eugene T. Genlin taught me how to focus. It's that simple. The results, for me, have been profound. I'm not one to go around recommending something just because it works for me. But after twenty years of benefiting from the simple process in this book, I begin to feel that I ought to share something so good. So, here you go.

A fantastic read and self help book. I read this during a 3 day power outage. (Lol, I read it in a few hours). If you are good at focusing and concentrating this book will help you deal with everything from stress to you name it. It helped cure me of a lifelong issue with insomnia.

How I missed this book in my various searching for "answers" is beyond me. It's a fabulous and wonderful now classic. AND as a result of the profundity of the message, an entire world wide community has risen which can be found online and at conferences around the world.

Got stuck on the unhelpful first two chapters for a long time. The technique is incredibly powerful and dovetails nicely with other practices such as Vipassana and Internal Family Systems.

Gendlin has written a timeless work of art. Focusing is becoming aware of feeling or emotion and paying attention to it, not engaging with it or trying to do something with it, just noticing it, then try to find a word that describes the feeling, hard, pressure, bingo, the word has freed the emotion and released it. It works every time and is awesome for self discovery and personal growth. What a gem.
