Coleman Barks is NOT a translator. It is a fact that he cannot read, write, or speak Persian. He at first plagiarized the translations of other translators, like William Chittick, and later flipped the script and relented by claiming that he is just an Interpreter who “interpreted” others translations (but still prints his books as “translated by...” and gives no credit to the real translators). His interpretations however are white-washed (read the New Yorker article “The Erasure of Islam From The Poetry of Rumi” by Rozina Ali) and do not retain the true essence of Rumi. This book and Westerners’ mania over these translations is like an allegory for colonialism all over again. Invaded, stolen, defiled, and erased.

I was introduced to Rumi in a college Religion course on mysticism, and fell in love with the depth found in the simplicity of his words. I now use this book as a "Magic 8-Ball" of sorts...if I have a problem, I flip through it and stop at random, and read through Rumi's answer for me. His poetry is beautiful and his wisdom leaps off the page into your heart: "you are not a drop in the ocean, you are the entire ocean in a drop," "maybe you are searching among the branches, for what only appears in the roots," are only a few of my favorites.

Before you buy this, research Coleman Barks. He doesn't read Farsi and therefore can't translate it, and he says that Rumi came to him in a dream with new poetry.

From what I have been able to figure out, this is THE Rumi book to have. 388 pages of poetry (ok, 388 pages does include intro, index, etc.) And even some recipes in the back. This book is what I was hoping it would be. If you want to read Rumi and don't know where to start, I suggest starting with this book!

Rumi is well known. Not sure what to add other than please read if you haven’t already. Lovers of language, beauty, philosophy or any combination thereof would be hard pressed to find more insightful precise enchanting delicious poetry. Read...pause in delight...read...pause in delight...smile. Repeat as often as needed until you soul is full.

Rumi is able to transcend age, gender, religion, and time. I cannot say enough good things about the poems in this collection and even my mom who is not interested in poetry/literature was in awe at the poems and words. While I had ordered this for class, I can see myself reading them for many years to come.Something that you guys may find helpful is something my professor said, having taught Rumi for a decade or so: "Read Rumi at certain intervals in your life, and you will find that the poems that impacted you in one way, will change into something meaningful in your current life. Continue to read Rumi and you will be inspired."

To be clear, I'm a casually interested reader, so i cannot common on the quality of the translation or value to serious scholars.This is great for anyone interested in some moment of contemplation or wanting to share an interesting, highly readable book of philosophy.. Although Rumi was Muslim and Islamic scholars and philosophers hold him in high regard, the selections in this text are not overtly sectarian or Islamic. Rumi wrote on a huge variety of subjects, most notably love, and this collection captures that diversity.

Glad to reunite with Dante and Rook. These two characters are so great together—a cop and a crook. Their love is so genuine, passionate, hot and sincere. However, it has been too long since book 1 and some of the characters I couldn’t remember if they were new or not. In fact, I had a hard time remembering the story from Book 1 and not enough of a recount was included in this version to enlighten me. It was a good mystery. Lots of bodies turning up. Some of the dialogue and descriptions were so long, I got lost in keeping with the storyline. My eyes glazed over. Nonetheless, I hope there will be a book 3.

OMG, I love Rook Stevens and Dante Montoya! A cat burglar turned honest and honorable detective create such an unlikely couple that you can't help yourself but love them. Rook's sass to Dante's sweetness, Rook's fear to Dante's steadiness - together they are so beautiful.Rook is as fidgety as an old maid when it comes to relationship, and his love for Dante scares him the most. He is ready to run but deep down he wants to stay but is worried that people will leave and he will be left in the dust. He struggles with his self worth but he is still ready to have faith in people. Dante keeps Rook in one piece with his love and sometimes by his sheer force of will. The support he gives Rook is one thing Rook never had, and Dante will do anything to show Rook how important he is to him, how much he cares and adores the stubborn man.I loved the humor, the movie jokes and the banter between all the characters. I loved Manny and Hank - both staunch supporters and always there for both men. Archie even cantankerous and stubborn as he is still has a piece of my heart even though only Rook could soften him enough to unbend for everybody else. Ms Rhys creates such vivid and beautiful depictions of Los Angeles that it feels like I can almost touch the buildings, see the little shops and all the little knickknacks that are sold in them, taste all the delicious food and just breathe in the air. I love how she writes.The murder Rook finds himself in the middle of THIS time because let's face it Rook is always in the middle of something, is centered around Martin family. Many secrets are revealed, past grudges are uncovered, old hurts surface to eventually blow up in Rook's face. The investigation kept me guessing (not that I didn't suspect anyone) till the end. I loved how Dante and Hank together with Rook solved the case, and how it all turned out in the end. I enjoyed this book immensely and highly recommend it.

I thoroughly enjoy Rhys Ford books. Making the decision to purchase the next book in a series was an easy choice. Her Murder and Mayhem series follows Rook Stevens a former cat burglar and Dante Montoya a LA Detective. In the first book Montoya is trying to catch the burglar who seems to have dead bodies piling up around him. Tramps and Thieves still have Montoya trying to catch the bad guys while discovering why his lover can’t seem to get away crime scenes and dead bodies.Shaking his old life is far more difficult than Rook ever imagined. The reason to stay on the good side of the law has everything to do with the law enforcer he is sharing his bed with. Romantic relationships comprised of more than a quick hot and dirty release is all a very new thing for Rook but it is also a thing he want to continue getting to know with Dante. He’s also trying to build a relationship with his crazy family. While the straight and narrow life may be how most of the world lives there are many things about his past that he misses. Getting a rush and a small taste of his old life with a simple prank was supposed to be fun and exhilarating. What Rook gets instead is a trip to a police station for more than a sweet visit with his boyfriend.Smooth and easy was never going to happen for Dante with his relationship with Rook. He knew that going in. Dante also knew that Rook was worth the all the trouble that follows him. While Dante is pretty sure Rook is white picket fence worthy he also knows that the dead bodies that seem to endlessly pile up around Rook won’t fit in that pretty picture at all. Now the two must work together to keep Rook out of jail and possibly the morgue.The mystery will keep you guessing in this sexy little romance. The motive kept me guessing up until it is all unveiled in the climatic end. I’m looking forward to where Rhys plans on taking them next. I’m sure the unexpected visitor from the last paragraph brought some baggage full drama.I read Murder and Mayhem when it published. It’s been a little while since I’ve spent time in this world. Alex and James are a couple that have a little page time. When I read the first book I remember thinking that they need a book. An email from Rhys answered that question. I purchased Grand Adventures but have yet to read it. I still need to read it because the Martin family (Alex) provides plenty of entertainment.

Rook and Dante are such a great pair of characters that they carried me through the chunk of this story wherein I was a little bored. When the plot thickens, it's a puzzler. The solutions are satisfying, both as a puzzle and in the way it plays out. The end is great. Ford's usual vivid picture-painting is sometimes great (to me) and sometimes just a distraction I skim. No way around that one, it's how she writes. Will I read the next one? Yes. Yes I will.

My husband and I purchased many copies of this hymnal to give as a gift to our church. I direct a children's choir and have used many of the hymns in the hymnal for the children to sing. The congregation loved the songs so much that I thought it would be nice if they were able to sing along too. The hymns are beautiful, particularly the communion hymns such as "In Remembrance of Me" and "One Bread, One Body". I also have played many selections during services when I have filled in for the pianist, such as "Spirit Song" and "You are Near". It is a wonderful compilation of new songs and some old favorites too like "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Joshua Fit da Battle of Jericho". I love playing the hymns and I am very pleased with the purchase.The only negative I would like to impart is that I wish there was an Organists version. It is very hard to keep the book open to the page you are playing since it is a hard cover and unlike most hymnals, the book does not stay open very well. Some of the songs go onto the next page and turning the page and keeping the book on the music stand is a challenge. It would be very helpful if it came in a spiral backed copy.

This is a fine collection of American music that has been approved, by the National Church, for the use with and in the liturgical environment of the church.It contains both Hymns and Service music.It makes a fine adjunct to the 1982 Hymnal as the music herein is both uplifting and traditionally American and goes over well when used. There are also some multi-part versions of music in the LEVAS that has been reduced to a single part version in the 1982 hymnal. These American classics are typically very well received by the congregants.

This is a valuable supplement to THE HYMNAL 1982. The compilers considered less traditional music that had not been included in the main hymnbook of the Episcopal Church. Noting the merit of other genres, this book was created. It includes spirituals, gospel songs, some African rhythms, and late nineteenth century choruses that offer variations to musical selections.

This is a really fine hymnal representing the church music of African Americans. It is useful for all with its interesting harmonies and rhythms. The accompanist edition is the most useful for the church musician.

The Hymnal arrived in perfect condition. This hymnal is loaded with memories and will warm your heart.

These are beautiful arrangements of African American religious songs and melodies, not too difficult for someone with intermediate piano-playing ability. I got this as a Christmas present, and have used it happily ever since. My only suggestion for improvement would be a spiral-bound edition, to make it easier to keep the book open on the piano stand.

Its fronting as an AMA approved publication, but a legal disclaim on the first page states "should not be construed as the policy of the AMA."The best example is the following conclusion: "[t]here is insufficient evidence for heavy work as a risk factor for low back pain." at page 201. The entire 11 paragraphs prior to the author's conclusion are cited studies showing heavy work is a risk factor (from weak to significant) for predicting low back symptoms. Immediately following the author's conclusion (after pages of tables referencing studies) is the following quote "A systematic review of the recent literature by Heneweer concluded that the occurrence of low back pain is related to the nature and intensity of the physical activities undertaken." The section ends with a twin study showing a statistically significant relation was identified ... with respect to reported heavy physical work.The disconnect between the evidence and the conclusion only makes sense when you follow the money. If you smell the book deeply, you can smell the big money insurance industry; this book is the modern day equivalent of a man on TV in a white jacket telling you you can trust him 'cigarettes are safe.'

You don't even have to read the actual studies! Design? Methodology? Analysis? Heck no! You just want to know what to say!You didn't go to med school and become a CIME just to have to keep abreast of important developments in your profession. Read this book so you don't actually have to do the work! After all, these companies don't pay you to think.

The Mental Health Chapter is Bizarre. The authors say that five steps must be followed for assessment. They are as followsSTEP 1. DEFINITIVELY ESTABLISH A DIAGNOSISThis involves making a definitive diagnosis, have the diagnosis of an explanatory nature, objective findings, scientifically validated diagnosis. They say that none of these criteria can be satisfied with DSM-IV-TR. They say that definitive diagnosis can not be made because 1. It can not be definitively determined if someone is mentally ill. 2. The diagnoses are not well defined one from the other. These arguments are silly. 1. If someone has symptoms, abnormal mental state examination, deterioration in functioning and collateral history, then I would be happy that they have a mental illness. The level of proof required is balance of probabilities, not definitive proof. 2. It does not matter that one diagnosis shares features with another. If you can explain to me the difference between recurrent myoclonic jerks and mild simple clonic seizures without secondary generalisation, then you are doing better than me. Can you always say which people have constrictive lung disease and which ones have restrictive disease. Or glucose intolerance vs diabetes? Nope. You can't.They say that a diagnosis must be of an explanatory nature, and that in medicine, they are. Well, wrong. First, PTSD does have causation as part of the diagnosis, and idiopathic hypertension does not. Likewise, premature labour does not have causation as part of the diagnosis - it just is. They of mental illness, "None of them are real illness". Good. If you have schizophrenia, you are cured!They say that there are no objective features of diagnosis of mental illness. This is silly. If someone presents with symptoms that fit a pattern, that is objective. If they have mental state findings, that is objective. If someone stopped going to work, that is objective and independently verifiable. Stated differently, Skinner insisted that behaviour was the only thing that mattered and that thoughts were unimportant. Well, Skinner would be able to tell if someone had a mental illness. They said that psychological testing was introduced to have objective findings introduced, well, that means that there are objective was to assess - psychological testing.STEP 2. APPLY RELEVANT FINDINGS FROM EPIDEMIOLOGIC SCIENCE TO THE INDIVIDUAL CASEThey say that 75 to 90% of people who are traumatised experience posttraumatic growth. And severe psychological disturbance in response to the chronic life-threatening stress is rare. More people report positive effects than negative effects. I say that PTG is an interesting concept and I will look at the references. I have not explored what they mean by "rare".They point out that most mental illness has no identifiable cause. I say so what, we are dealing with specific cases.They reviewed the literature and found that none of it was any good, more or less. They excluded literature that did not use DSM-IV criteria. Their rationale was that the construct had changed. I think that that that decision was just bizarre. The diagnostic criteria for PTSD and MDD have not changed very much since 1980. That is just a silly out.They also complain that the assessments were done on community samples and that DSM-IV says that clinical samples should be used. That is a good laugh. That means that you literally can not do epidemiological studies of DSM-IV because the rules of DSM-IV rule them out. This stance ignores the fact that field trials were used in developing DSM-IV.My final note is that Thomas Szasz actually hated his patients. Look at his last book, Psychiatry Science of Lies, and you will see what he says about people who have gone public with their illness. Also, the biology of serious mental illness is being elucidated more and more.

This book is being used in my Domestic Violence class this semester, and it has brought a great amount of awareness about this topic across the world. I have been shocked to learn the horrors that many women suffer across religions, economic circumstances, and developed countries. I am also intrigued at how men suffer from domestic violence, but it seems like a taboo topic. Prostitution, child abuse, and elder abuse are covered here as well. This is a great book with very insightful information. You will not be disappointed with the purchase of this book!

I used this book in my Domestic Violence class and when I first got it I was like okay I know enough about Domestic Violence. However this book is really helpful in teaching about Domestic Violence all over the world. I liked learning new terms like Dowry. I also liked how it was easy to read and really made it clear about the challenges victims face. I liked that it looked in to more areas then just female victims or children. This book made my class very informative.
