In his recent book "Managers not MBAs" Henry Mintzberg points out the pitfalls of masters degrees taught by management schools but which don't actually help people learn about management. This book is certainly valuable reading, particularly to understand how senior members of the engineering profession are thinking in the USA about engineering education reform. But, is bolting on a management "correction" going to fix the problem with engineers? Masters courses in professional engineering featuring similar content are appearing at many different universities worldwide. I'm not sure that this is the right answer. One of the main problems is that there is no clear models of what engineers really do that really match up with reality so many educators are largely working in the dark. Of course, one of the intriguing things about the whole debate on MBA courses is that the demand for them continues, and so does the belief that they provide a qualification for management. Certainly the recommended content described in this book would be very valuable for many engineers but am not sure that it really solves many of the problems that are eloquently described in the introductory sections of the book.
