Preacher plays poker professionally. He's been asked to help figure out if a parishioner in a friend's congregation was cheated financially and then committed suicide when he couldn't deal with the loss. We find that Preacher was actually ordained many years prior along with the friend who asked for help. They were in seminary together. Though after Preacher came back from Viet Nam he resigned the priesthood. We start in Farewell NM at the Friday night poker game and start learning about the townspeople and their relationship to the victim. This is a really good story. I will be looking for more in the series.
This is a WOW book, you must read how the Preacher was developed into the person he has become; I will not give that away here, you must find out for yourself, you will no be disappointed. The Preacher is contacted by a friend who is a priest, he asks the Preacher to look into the death of a friend named Prescott and to see if there is any corruption using his gambling skills to find out. There are many bumps and turns to this book that you will all enjoy. I am now hooked with this character to want to continue on with this series.
One might wonder what kind of book has such a title. Knowing who published it was all I needed to know so I jumped in and was not disappointed. Though some poker terminology eluded me the story only involves poker as a means to an end. This has an Old West theme modernized to fit the times. We are talking helicopters and fancy cars but we are also talking about scheming and greed so ageless in that sense. There is a preacher, but he is not a gambler and there is a gambler but he is called the preacher. The preacher has skills and abilities that have been enhanced through his life experience and poker playing is just one of the many skills he possesses. Turns out his skill are enough to thwart the greedy and the corrupt and to restore possessions and resources to the rightful widow. Plenty of action, plots and twists to keep mystery thrillers engrossed in a great story. Sadly, the author is deceased but his works are being revived for a new generation of readers.
I found "The Preacher " to be a captivating story. Thackrey's story holds the reader's interest throughout. While I often thought I had the plot figured out, it continued to evolve beyond my predictions. I found the literary imagery invoked by the story to be especially well done. Although this is not my favorite genre, I will be reading other works by Ted Thackrey.
Our author passed in 2001 but left a legacy of fine writing that's not easily replicated. The Preacher is a professional poker player who comes to to work his magic on the local movers and shakers. What he stumbled into is a mass of deceit and pure greed for a lousy pile of dirt that for some reason the big boys in town will stop at nothing to secure for themselves. While reading ,picture in your mind The Preacher as a young Clint Eastwood in your favorite spaghetti western ...it just makes the reading that much better. Enjoy this work of art from a master storyteller.
I really liked how this book was written: very easy reading style and not too wordy. The plot and characters were stars, too. The author did such a good job of defining them and keeping them consistently in character that you just want to meet some of them--especially the preacher. The author kept you guessing with the plot and its twists and turns. A great read!
A couple flaws first. Maybe I missed it, but it took a while for me to get the time line right. Initially I assumed it to be fairly current. More like 1980s I think.I think he overdid some of the good ole boy dialect. Added nothing really and just seemed silly.But the story was compelling, the characters were very well done and the plot twists were well done also. I like the links to poker. Original and very well done. Insightful. The climax and denouement were excellent.
