About the Author
Jamie E. Prenatt is a senior analyst in the Department of Defense. He has over 30 years of military and civilian intelligence experience and has served in a wide range of analytic, leadership, and representational assignments. He holds an MA in Government/National Security Policy from Georgetown University and has a particular interest in weapon systems development. He has taught military history, wargaming, and historical miniature painting at the Smithsonian Institution for several years and intelligence studies at the university level. In September 1939, Poland faced near simultaneous invasions by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, both possessed of huge, modern, forces that included thousands of tanks. Poland's Army was overwhelmed in just weeks. It is a small irony, pointed out by the author of this book, that Poland had leaned well forward in acquiring tanks in the interwar period, and possessed small numbers of at least one tank that was competitive with the best that Germany and the Soviet Union could field."Polish Armor of the Blitzkrieg" is an Osprey New Vanguard series book, authored by Jamie Prenatt, with illustrations by Henry Morshead. This is a very concise account, focused on the various armored vehicles fielded by Poland in 1939, most notably the 7TP, a very capable tank whose numbers were too small to turn the tide of invasion. The author also addresses the variety of obsolete and training tanks, tankettes, armored cars, and armored prime movers used by the Polish Army, which never had the time or the money to deal with its very real challenges. The text is nicely supported by an excellent selection of period photographs, cutaway diagrams of individual vehicles, and modern illustrations. The author wrestles with the intended organization of the Polish armor forces, and provides some interesting vignettes of their use in combat. His conclusions are short but to the point and worth reading. Recommended to students of the Second War World War and of the evolution of armored forces.
Polish armor is of course something of a niche topic given that Poland managed to survive about a month into World War 2. But happily such is the interest still in this gargantuan conflict that even niche topics are explored in print. The contributions of the various early victims of the German blitzkrieg deserve more than ‘speed bump’ status.This volume is quite concise. It stretches to 48 pages and that includes an array of photographs as well as illustrations by Henry Morshead. The volume follows the patter of others in the series and it follows the various armoured vehicles of the Polish army in a chronological order. This means there is discussion of Polish tanks from the FT17’s that were still in service in small numbers in 1939 through to Vickers, R35’s and the most well-known Polish armoured vehicle of WW2 – the 7TP. After running through the tanks the book then looks at tankettes. These too are looked at in chronological order and then the book looks at armoured cars. This is a nice touch and is of course included because, well, they had the room and they’d never do a book solely on Polish armoured cars would they….There is enough background on the vehicles, tables of statistics in terms of vitals and also discussion of the way the different vehicles performed. This facet in particular was interesting as, again, it showed the way the Polish forces conducted themselves and rebuts any of the aforementioned ‘speed bump’ comments.All up a very handy release for those with an interest in armoured vehicles of WW2.
A book on Polish armor (tanks, tankettes, armored cars, and more) did you know the Poles had French R-35 tanks? The Poles were in a bad spot with 3 borders to defend and not enough to do it with. Well worth the money if the early WWII interests you.
An excellent book on the history of the Polish armor. The book includes photos, diagrams, and useful detail for modelers and people that like WWII topics.
